Conference on Energy transition in fisheries – from visions to actions
4. -5. november 2025
Conference on Energy transition in fisheries – from visions to actions. A platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and solution-building.
The conference is hosted by the Natural Resources Insitute Finland, and will bring together stakeholders to share innovations, align policies, and co-develop solutions, resulting in a Joint Declaration that outlines actionable commitments for the Nordic fisheries sector and more broadly in the EU.
The work seeks to facilitate the transition to energy-efficient and low-emission fisheries while ensuring competitiveness, sustainability, and strong regional collaboration.
What can be done to boost the energy transition of Northern European fisheries to sustainable, energy efficient, renewable and low-carbon energy sources? What kind of innovative solutions and collaborative actions are required to reach net zero emission targets?
Background
The Northern European fisheries sector plays a pivotal role in the sustainable development of the region’s economy, environment, and communities. However, the sector continues to rely heavily on fossil fuels, making it vulnerable to fluctuating energy prices and challenged by national and European commitments to green energy transition. There is an urgent need for implementable solutions and collaborative action both in the political and practical sphere.
The Conference on Energy transition in fisheries – from visions to actions responds to this need by bringing together Northern European stakeholders to define concrete actions for a decarbonization of the fisheries sector. The conference hosts a pitching competition on recent innovations in energy efficiency and decarbonization in the fisheries sector, and the winner will be decided and announced during the conference. The conference will culminate in a Joint Declaration, outlining concrete steps for the green energy transition in the Northern European fisheries sector.
The conference program includes the following themes:
• EU targets and roadmap for energy transition
• Moving towards net zero emissions target
• Fleet policy and fisheries management
• Gearing the fisheries policy to achieve energy transition
• Strengthening cooperation in the Northern European fisheries sector.

For participants, the conference offers a space for:
• Knowledge-sharing, peer-learning and inspiration
• Co-development of concrete solutions
• Networking and fostering both cross-sectoral and regional collaboration in Northen European fisheries
The ultimate outcome of the conference is to support the Northern European fisheries sector in efforts of energy efficiency and decarbonization. Concrete steps to achieve this objective are outlined in the Joint Declaration.
