The Third Forum Workshop: “Consumers and Climate Change in Fisheries and Aquaculture” will be
hosted at Hotel Marine Plaza, Helsingborg, Sweden, 16 January 2025.
The overall objective of the Third Forum Workshop is to understand the role of fisheries stakeholders
and how policies and private initiatives can leverage consumer influence and their buying power. The focus is on understanding the role of policies and practices (e.g. labelling, information campaigns, etc.)
that can harness the power of consumers to make informed buying decisions.

On behalf of the project Sufi-Nova, we kindly invite to a symposium on relevant and needed “Knowledge for sustainable fisheries” in the Nordic countries. The symposium is held at Institute of Marine Research in Bergen from 13 to 14^th November 2024.

Background and rationale for the symposium

According to the Nordic Council of Ministries Vision 2030; the Nordic Region will become the most sustainable and integrated region in the world. One of the criteria for sustainable fisheries is to minimize impacts on the seafloor habitats, particularly those that are considered vulnerable by ICES, OSPAR, and FAO, commonly referred to as Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs). To reach the goal of securing biological diversity alongside sustainable resources use in the Nordic seas, the exchange of knowledge between the fisheries sector, the scientific field, and managers is vital.

Since 2022 the project “Sustainable Network” (a network of organizations) has operated to support sustainable fisheries with the main goal of using the best practices to evaluate fisheries in Iceland, Faroes, Norway and Greenland for the MSC certification process. From 2016 to 2024, scientists from the Marine Research Institutes in Norway, Iceland, and the Faroes, have collaborated to document VMEs in national waters in the project “NovasArc“ . The aim has been on model and predict present and future distribution of VMEs in the Nordic seas and impact from fisheries.  Since 2023 these two groups have been collaborating in the project “Sufi-Nova”.

The main goal of the project “Sufi-Nova” is to support communication between Fisheries and Science. An important objective for the project is to arrange a set of workshops/symposia to support communication between the main stakeholders in relation to sustainable fisheries. We hope that the Bergen symposium on Knowledge for Sustainable fisheries will broaden the forum for knowledge exchange to including management entities, fishermen organisations, scientists, and NGOs on present views on best practice for fisheries in the Nordic seas.

Central topics for discussion

Knowledge based designation of marine protected areas, as required by OSPAR. Contribution from marine science to the evaluation process of fisheries effect on benthic habitats for e.g. MSC.

Tentative agenda

Experiences and outcomes from “Sustainable Network” and “NovasArc“ participants in the Sufi-Nova project will be presented as a background for the symposium.

Invited speakers will present relevant topics, including the certification process in the Marine Stewardship Certification (MSC) standards for habitat consideration.

We hope you find the symposium interesting and relevant and hope that participants will give a presentation on expectation and experience that are relevant to the topics. It is the exchange of ideas and knowledge that is the main goal of the symposium and for that we need your participation.

Practicalities

There is no symposium fee, and lunch will be included and will take place at the meeting location at IMR. Accommodation and travel will be at own coast.

Projektet  Catalysing the Energy, som udføres af RISE Research Institutes of Sweden med deltagelse fra DK, GRL, IS, NO og FO, afholder konference i Göteborg 19/11.

 

Projektets mål er at forstå forskellene i datatilgængelighed for brændstofforbrug i fiskeriet og regler, der påvirker det og brændstofrelaterede emissioner og se på, hvordan disse forskelle kan udlignes. Denne viden skal anvendes til at definere et større og mere langsigtet samarbejde omkring energiomstillingen og dekarboniseringen af den nordiske fiskerisektor.

Det nordiske visjonsprosjektet Havforvaltning og klima under Nordisk ministerråd inviterer forvaltere, politikere, forskere og interesseorganisasjoner fra hele Norden for å presentere styrket kunnskap om nordiske havområder og for å diskutere havforvaltning og hvordan miljøtilstanden kan forbedres.

På konferansen vil ledende nordiske havforskere legge fram sitt arbeid. Forskerne vil oppdatere politikere og forvaltere med den nyeste kunnskapen om klimaendringenes betydning for nordiske hav- og kystområder, med speciellt fokus på Skagerrak. Det nordiske prosjektet har samtidig styrket kunnskapen om hvordan vi kan forbedre tilstanden i økosystemene i havet. Förvaltare från Sverige, Norge och Danmark presenterar utmaningar och möjligheter med havsförvaltning i ett föränderligt klimat och konferensen möjliggör samtal över gränser. Visjonsprosjektet er anerkjent som et prosjekt under FNs havforskningstiår.

Forskere, forvaltere, politikere, næringsliv og organisasjoner fra de nordiske landene inviteres til havkonferanse for å oppsummere två års havforskningsarbeid. Arrangementet er gratis. Det vil bli servert enkel lunsj.

The Nordic Conference on Co-location of Marine Industries was held from September 25 to September 26 at Sankt Gertrud Konferens in Malmö. The conference aimed to bring Nordic stakeholders together and facilitate an exchange of ideas as a part of Sweden’s presidency in the Nordic Council of Ministers. The main focus of the conference was offshore renewable energy, fishing, and aquaculture, aiming to highlight opportunities and challenges with increasing demand for sea space and promoting nature-positive solutions for co-location. This report aims to summarize the content that was presented during the conference along with the input that was gathered from the attendees, as well as provide suggestions for future work towards increased coexistence and co-location of marine industries.
